Improving the health of African American men by addressing chronic health conditions through their trusted barbers and barbershops
Without the right care for these preventable and treatable diseases, African American men die 5 years earlier than the general population and have worse quality of life. Live Chair enhances and expands on an innovative approach successfully piloted for more than 35 years and reported in the New England Journal of Medicine—equipping and training barbers to use blood pressure monitors, during their bi-weekly haircuts, to screen their African American clients for hypertension, and refer at-risk men for treatment.
Live Chair barbers are using their contact and influence to overcome healthcare inequities that have caused gaping health disparities for African American men. Equipped with a blood pressure monitor and driven by purpose, our barbers can now empower, encourage, and enable their clients to better manage their health conditions and live a healthier life.
Live Chair barbers help their clients better manage chronic health conditions and live a healthier, happier life.
Health disparity populations suffer from higher rates of chronic disease, primarily because they are not receiving recommended health screenings, preventive care and disease management support.
Despite good intentions and best efforts, many healthcare providers are not able to reach, influence or alter the behavior of their minority patients.
Live Chair can help front-line primary care providers engage, assess, influence, and track these patients, improving adherence to care protocols and enhancing control of hypertension and other chronic diseases.
Live Chair incorporates healthcare providers into its network of trusted barbers, community resources, tools and processes; together, they integrate recommended health and healthcare services into people’s routines and lifestyle, starting with a bi-weekly haircut.
Instead of costly acute and long-term care after a debilitating stroke, heart attack or other medical catastrophe, Live Chair shifts healthcare services for at-risk populations to preventive care and disease management support in a primary care setting.
Live Chair can help healthcare systems reduce uncompensated medical care for uninsured or under-insured patients; reduce avoidable, penalizable medical care; and improve patient quality of care satisfaction and star ratings.
Live Chair can help health insurers reach, engage and encourage disengaged members to take a wide-variety of coordinated health-oriented actions contributing to an improvement in health outcomes.
Our coordinated care networks - comprised of barbers and other clinically-equipped community partners - position us to serve as a highly credible, hyper-localized, virtual extension of your teams, helping surface new health risks and better manage existing ones.
We can reach disengaged or avoidant members, conduct various screens and refer them to the most appropriate resources that you’ve already developed.
Our networks are configured to provide the access, insights and influence needed to spur the right, personalized actions by members, helping them to achieve better health outcomes.
